Penny Hot Springs, our first natural spring will always hold a place in our hearts. While generally speaking it wasn’t a great experience, it was what set us off on our journey to ensure if there is a long drive we will find a spring. Here is the sequence of events: We just left Aspen. It was getting dark fast. We didn’t know where we were going to sleep. A blizzard was sneaking up on us rather fast. We wanted to pull over and park for the night but didn’t have a place to stop. SO, we turned to google maps and looked down the road we were on and sure enough there was a place with hot springs in the title. We’re always up for adventure so we cruised to it and parked on the side of the road to check it out.

Once we parked and look down the short cliff side to the water Caleigh collared, “Is it warm?!” The female who is wearing a bikini while sitting on a rock outside of the spring retorts back, “uhh YES.” That was all it took, we changed and cruised down and quickly learned why she was out of the water and not in. I took a heavy step into the shallow pool of 4 inches and quickly jumped out. It was SOO hot I needed to find cool water to cool it down. My dumb butt went to the creek and plunged it into it…equally as hot. Yikes. I learned my lesson from the quick dips and slowly eased my way into the water after this. After what felt like eternity I slipped entirely into the 4 inch deep water, regulating my body temperature by keeping half of if out the water and half in. I figured out where the heat was seeping through in the small pool and used my body as a damn so Caleigh could get in.

While it was not the best soaking experience it was super cool nonetheless. We felt adrenaline from doing something new. The beautiful snow was falling and melting on our bare skin was we soaked in hot water. We were in the middle of nowhere with no worries or concerns. It was an awesome night.

P.S. Parking is right on the road so camping is not recommended.
